On Facebook there are a number of DJ groups that I am apart of and the other day I cam across this post I think many DJ's should read.
"Whats up people? Just wanted to share a few things on my mind with you all. You as a DJ are a business!! Invest in yourself and treat yourself as a product. Nobody wants the cheapest TV or stereo in the store people want the one that has the most features. Look at yourself as that TV/Stereo and enhance your features. If you have a large following on FB or twitter that is a selling point. Don't DJ for cheap but then advertise and event to your thousands of followers. Make a promoter pay for that or earn it. Many of us bring more to the table than just being dj's. I'm a fan of many of you reading this and while the argument could go on for days about who Buffalo's best DJ is where does that even get you in the first place. Many times people want a DJ who's reliable. What good is being the BEST DJ if your always late or show up to a wedding smelling like weed? Protect yourself. Contracts and deposit's are your friends!! If You do a contract not only does it protect you but also your client as well. Deposits are a great way to get your money in advance. People having weddings have given the limo, the church and the reception hall a deposit why not you as a DJ? As a former radio DJ I was not on the radio because I was the best DJ I was on because I was willing to work hard, was dependable and thought outside of the box when it came to playing and programing my show. Sooner or later you as a DJ will have to figure out what you want your next step to be is and put it in motion. I personally got sick of of waiting for promoters to pay me, seeing them do parties wrong and felt I could do a better job. I decided I wanted to be the one paying people instead of waiting to get paid. Lastly don't burn bridges. Keep good relationships with each other. We don't have to be best friends with each other but we should at least respect each other. DJ's are the party and many promoters are trying to discount what we bring to the table. Be a DJ because you love it and the music and not because you wanna get into parties free or to get women. My door is always open to any of you if you ever need my help with anything!"
